About Furoshiki

Furoshiki(風呂敷) is a traditional Japanese wrapping cloth. Not only is it highly decorative, but it's also incredibly practical due to its versatility, allowing for various uses.

One of the most common uses is wrapping objects of all shapes and sizes, but it can also be tailored into a bag, displayed as wall decor, or even worn as part of clothing.

The History of Furoshiki

Furoshiki have been used in Japan for centuries, with records indicating their use as early as the Nara period (710-794 AD). At that time, they were simply referred to as "tsutsumi."

It wasn't until the Muromachi Period (1336-1573) that the term "furoshiki" became associated with these wrapping cloths. High-ranking individuals, such as feudal lords, began using them to protect their garments while visiting public baths. In Japanese, "furo" means bath and "shiki" means to spread, which accurately describes their function.

Furoshiki finally began to be used by commoners during Japan's Edo Period (1603-1867). During this era, public baths became more accessible to the general populace, and it was there that they realized furoshiki were an excellent way of carrying all sorts of bath goods. Over time, people discovered even more uses for furoshiki and began creating them in various sizes, eventually leading to the furoshiki we love and use today.

Why Use a Furoshiki?

Reusable, environmentally friendly, and beautifully designed furoshiki are currently gaining popularity worldwide, as they help reduce waste and can be used repeatedly.
