About the Nichiren Sect
The Nichiren Sect is a school of Japanese Buddhism founded by Saint Nichiren in the mid-Kamakura period (1253). It regards the *Lotus Sutra*—the essence of Shakyamuni Buddha's teachings—as supreme, and teaches that anyone can equally attain Buddhahood by chanting the *daimoku*: "Namu Myōhō Renge Kyō."
