About kumihimo
Kumihimo is a Japanese word meaning "gathered threads" and it is a form of braid-making said to date back to the 6th century and to have been imported from China and the Korean peninsula. Patterns and techniques were trasmitted among the members of a family and kept secret. Kumihimo was widely used in Shinto rituals, as decoration in Buddhist temples, and as attire among the nobles of the Imperial Court. It was long used by the samurai for sword straps, armor, and horses.
In the Meiji period, following the decline of the samurai class, people began to use kumihimo as obijime to hold kimono's sash and draw attention to its fabric.
Kumihimo has appeared in the world-wide known animation movie "Your name" in which Mitsuha uses it to tie her hair, whereas Taki uses it as a bracelet.
