This Juzu is a Jodo-shu’s formal style one.Bodhi seeds are usually used without being polished so they have small ridges or veins showing and they are a solid color. It is believed that while Prince Siddhartha was sitting under a bodhi tree meditating, he became Buddha through enlightenment. The meaning of bodhi seeds is leading to peace and wisdom.
In Japan, Buddhists have Prayer beads (Juzu, Nenju). Kyoto is famous as a producing center of Prayer beads.
Prayer beads are a traditional tool used to count the number of times a mantra is recited, breaths while meditating, counting prostrations, or the repetitions of a buddha's name.
