This is a one-handed prayer bead. It can be used by practitioners of any Buddhist school.
In Japan, Buddhists use prayer beads (Juzu, Nenju). Kyoto is a famous producing center.
Prayer beads are a traditional tool used to count the number of times a mantra is recited, breaths while meditating, count prostrations, or the repetitions of a Buddha's name.
