About the artist

Keisuke Serizawa was a Japanese dyeing craftsman.

Based on the techniques of traditional crafts such as Edo Komon and Ise Japanese paper, he created original Japanese-style works.
He developed the technique of stencil dyeing, certified as an intangible cultural heritage.
Keisuke Serizawa is a renowned representative Japanese craftsman in the world.

Patterns

Japanese sentence (Beige) : Japanese "iroha song" lyrics sentence. Iroha song was written in Heian era. The lyrics of Iroha song are written using 47 all hiragana.

Cloth characters (White):
The meaning of characters is "spring, summer, autumn and winter" in Japanese.

Suhama shape (Orange) :
Suhama shape is Japanese traditional shape of a coastal beach.
There are characters of spring, summer, autumn, and winter in the suhama shapes.

Fruits & Vegetables (Brown) :
cute fruits and vegetables such as mandarins and apples are drawn in trapezoids.

Aesop's Fables (Navy blue) :
Aesop's Story is an ancient Greek story series.
The Aesop's story was translated into Japanese during the Muromachi period.

History and uses of furoshiki 

In Japan, wrapping cloths (known as furoshiki) are a tradition.
They are a fabulous, eco-friendly way of wrapping objects including and wine bottles, clothes & gifts. Furoshiki embraces the philosophy of eco-friendly living by challenging us on how many items we really need. This beautiful and ingenious art allows one object to have many uses simply by folding and tying the cloth in a different way.

While Japanese culture is not alone in using fabric wrapping, furoshiki has a distinctive style reflecting Japanese interest in ceremony, beauty, multi-functional objects and thoughtfulness in detail as an approach to everyday life.

Cloth wrappings have been used for over 1200 years in Japan and the word furoshiki dates back to the Edo period (1603-1868) when cloths were commonly used in bath houses to wrap clothes and as a bath mat. The word furoshiki means 'bath spread'.

Over time, Japanese people developed a multitude of uses and patterns that are both elegant and functional. One furoshiki cloth can be used as :
