This is the 108 beads Soto sect buddhist rosary.

Ebony is a dense black/brown hardwood, most commonly yielded by several different species in the genus Diospyros, which also contains the persimmons. Ebony is dense enough to sink in water. It is finely-textured and has a very smooth finish when polished, making it valuable as an ornamental wood.

In Japan, Buddhists have Prayer beads (Juzu, Nenju). Kyoto is famous as a producing center of Prayer beads.

Prayer beads are a traditional tool used to count the number of times a mantra is recited, breaths while meditating, counting prostrations, or the repetitions of a buddha's name.

※ It takes about 2~3 weeks to make this rosary.

※ The color may differ from the actual one depending on the coloration condition of the monitor.

Beautifully Constructed Juzu!

I first learned about Kyoto Asahiya a few years ago. Occasionally, I would go to the website to check in on my favorite juzu, the Soto style one. I put off buying it for years. Last summer, I found myself in Kyoto and set off on foot from Shimogyo Ward to Nakagyo in search of the Kyoto Asahiya store. There were two things that I wanted to do during my brief stay in Kyoto: buy a Soto style juzu at Kyoto Asahiya, visit Kosho-ji in Uji City. I made it to Uji, but due to my own folly I went looking for a store that didn't exist, because Kyoto Asahiya is a web-store, a really great one. Hahaha. I had a great walk though and ended up spending some time at a nearby book store. I decided not to buy a juzu from somewhere else in Kyoto, planning to just order the Soto style juzu from Kyoto Asahiya when I got back home. I am really glad that I did! It is just perfect. It is so well made and beautifully constructed- a true objet d'art and a functional part of my daily life. It is so well made that I will be using it for many years to come. I will probably order a second juzu, exactly the same, so I never have to buy another one again! At 50 years old, two of them should get me to the end! Don't hesitate to purchase something from Kyoto Asahiya! Great communication and delivery.
